Voice Tunnel by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer
Voice Tunnel is the signature event of Summer Streets 2013. Open to pedestrians for the first time in history, the Park Avenue Tunnel, which runs from East 33rd Street to East 40th Street, will be open to pedestrians at the south entrance starting at 7 am. The line closes at 11:30 am.
Participants will control 360 powerful theatrical spotlights and 180 loud speakers by speaking into a special intercom at the center of the tunnel – with new recordings pushing older ones down the array of light fixtures and speakers, each recorded voice in perfect synchronicity to the adjacent modulating lights. The progression provides the installation with a sense of narrative and gradual immersion leading to a crescendo in the middle of tunnel, adjacent to the voice intercom. 100 participants’ voices will be illuminated in the tunnel at any given time.
Experience Voice Tunnel at Summer Streets by entering the Park Avenue Tunnel at 33rd Street. While bikes will not be permitted inside the tunnel for safety, free bike valet parking located at 32nd Street and 40th Street will enable all participants at Summer Streets to experience this installation.
